Traffic Increases at Darwin Airport and Alice Springs Airport
Posted on: August 20th, 2008 by Paul ScottIan Kew, the CEO of Northern Territory Airports, announced that the traffic results of passengers for the Darwin Airport and the Alice Springs Airport for the financial year of 2007-2008 were up. The international passengers who traveled through the Darwin Airport rose by 33%, and the domestic traffic increased by 9%. Also, the domestic passenger numbers for the Alice Springs Airport increased by 6% with an increase of capacity. The passenger growth is due to an increased capacity from all of the carrier partners, as well as extra attractive fare pricing initiatives through the traditionally low season. Mr. Kew says that the last financial year turned out to be very positive for both of the airports, and the results speak for theirselves. They have worked close with all of the carriers to make sure that their airports continue receiving adequate capacity for catering to the increased demand.
The passenger growth internationally was driven mostly by those living in the Northern Territory, enjoying budget fares and more choices for leisure destinations, as well as a big component being made up by those from southern States who use Darwin Airport for connecting to the southeastern region of Asia. The chance for Darwin Airport to become a connecting destination couldn’t have been better, Mr. Kew says, and it is essential that the industry of tourism take this chance, as it will also help to smooth out the troughs and peaks that exist withing the market. He also added that in light of the harder operating environment during the 2nd half of this year, they are pleased with their results at the airports.
