Such a Big Economic Impact for Such a Small Airport
Posted on: August 25th, 2008 by Tina LaneBankstown Airport has been a lynchipin in the economy for the region of Western Sydney, generating activity in the economy of 733 million dollars each year. The Economic Impact of Bankstown Airport, which was readied by URS Australia, says that the airport has delivered flow-on contributions of 1.3 billion dollars to the wider economy.
Kim Ellis, the Chief Executive of Bankstown Airport, said that the airport is a vital infrastructure piece, with their continued investment and solid business activity providing a major boost for the economy in New South Wales. Many of their customers and tenants are reporting business activity to be at record levels, he continued, and this has been supported by the number of plane movements, making the airport one of the busiest in Australia. The more significant sector is plane manufacturing, which includes plane maintenance. This sector has become a dominant contributor to the economy at 57% of the whole impact on the economy.
The Economic Impact of Bankstown Airport estimated that the gross output of the airport from all of their activities was 1.3 billion dollars, which provided income to households amounting to 416 million dollars, employing about 6,000 staff. Mr. Ellis says that since the airport’s privatization, their investment levels have risen, amounting to more than 30 million dollars, and they anticipate that it will increase even more with 200 million dollars worth of development projects already in the works or being obtained. The multiplier effect is going to be significant to the wider and local economies, he continued, and they consider that the results support the Sydney Metropolitan Airport. With more developments, Ellis added, they have a positive outlook on the airport, as well as the households and businesses that rely on it.
