A flight to Canberra from Melbourne with Tiger Airways was canceled on Friday, following passengers noticing a burning smell, as well as hearing noises. Elizabeth Laczynski, a passenger flying with Tiger Airways to see her daughter on Friday morning, said that the aircraft shook as it slowly moved along the runway. She said that there was a bad smell at first, and then the aircraft was shaking, resembling the sound of a washing machine that is really old. The passengers were instructed to leave the plane when they were taken back to the terminal. A spokesman for Tiger Airways said that there wasn’t any reason for there to be a burning smell, but the odor could have come from fumes from other planes.

Meanwhile a flight to London from Melbourne with Qantas Airways was delayed for nearly 24 hours on Thursday, following the malfunction of an engine valve. The flight was already boarded and ready to depart Tullamarine Airport at 3:30 in the afternoon, but then the flight was delayed due to an engine valve not working correctly. An aircraft to replace the flight left a little after 1:00 in the afternoon on Friday. Geoff Dixon, who is a supporter of a merger, said on Friday that Qantas Airways will inevitably merge together with another main carrier. However, officials in the industry have given that plan a cold reception, flagging their worries about the Sale Act of Qantas. Mr. Dixon says that other carriers are beginning to merge and they have to be a part of that. People will need to understand that this is going to happen, he added.
