Carriers have been told to get on the ball, following new figures being revealed that 25% of the flights arriving and departing at Cairns Airport are late. Tourism bosses said that the plunge of being on time, which was only 10% years ago, couldn’t happen during a worse time when the industry is already suffering from image issues. Desley Boyle, the Tourism Minister, will be seeking a meeting with the chiefs of carriers in order to get them back on track. Tourism is key to Cairns, she said, and anything that may jeopardize the experience of tourists is not acceptable.

Official government statistics for the aviation industry for June show that 28% of the flights coming to Cairns Airport aren’t on time, and around 25% of the flights leaving the airport don’t depart on time. Jetstar has been the worst performer in both flying to and from the destination, followed by Qantas Airways and Virgin Blue. Only 35% of the flights for Qantas departing for Melbourne leave on time, and Jetstar’s statistics show that 56% of their services from Brisbane were landing on schedule. These figures are about the same as Brisbane Airport, but they are worse than Gold Coast Airport.

On Wednesday of last week, there were 4 domestic flights observed to be late within only 20 minutes of each other. Some travelers in Melbourne weren’t impressed when the flight from Jetstar arrived late by 20 minutes. One of them said that Qantas Airways is late all the time, as all of her friends are always late due to flights.
