Medal Winners Welcomed at Brisbane Airport
Posted on: August 28th, 2008 by Tanya DuttnelThe Olympians of Queensland were given a huge welcome when they landed at the Brisbane Airport on Tuesday morning. They were greeted with a very big group of media and hundreds of family and friends wearing gold and green, gathered at the gate, and waving flags with bouquets of flowers in their hands for their heroes.
Their flight arrived around 11:30 with cheers and clapping as the Olympians walked off the plane, where their loved ones embraced them. Bronte Barratt, a swimmer for Brisbane and gold medalist, was greeted by close friends who have known each other since school. She said that she could hear the screaming when she got off the aircraft, and she knew that it was her friends. She also said that she looked forward to having a short holiday away from training to see friends and family and going to Thailand.
Ken Wallace, a gold and bronze kayaking medalist from Gold Coast, was welcomed by what could have been the welcome home committee that was the loudest. His friends held up a big sign, yelling and cheering, when he got off the plane. Wallace said that while their arrival in Sydney earlier was special, returning to Queensland was more emotional. There were a ton of people there who have supported him over the years, he continued, and it really means something to be there in front of them with the medals he has won.
Other Olympians to arrive at the Brisbane Airport were swimmer Libby Trickett and diver Melissa Wu, who both won silver medals. Emma Snowsill, a triathlete also on the flight, said that the most exciting thing wasn’t her fame, but the support that she has received from everyone. There was also another flight that showed up about 30 minutes later, receiving a similar welcome.
